Lutong Nanay: Creating Happy Childhood Memories

8:06 PM

What comes to your mind whenever you cook or eat sinigang? I bet it brings back happy childhood memories that will most likely include vivid pictures of your mother whipping up some magic in the kitchen. That is what we often refer to as Lutong Nanay

Lutong Nanay or food lovingly cooked by mothers for their families is known for its powers in bringing members together. That and the need to bring back the passion for home-cooked meals to Filipino families prompted Knorr to launch its Sarap ng Lutong Nanay Campaign. This is one way in which Knorr champions delicious home-cooked meals in this age and time when instant food and dining out have become the norm.

All Time Favorite

Children are known to be picky eaters. Making them eat nutritious food can be quite a challenge and exhausting, if I may add. Sinigang however, has managed to transcend this resistance among children. In fact, most children then and now, have and will count sinigang as their favorite dish. Some even say it is a wonder dish that kids love.

#Lutong Nanay Event

Knorr recently held its 3rd #LutongNanay event last August 12, 2016 at The Cookery Place in BGC, Taguig. There were about 20 bloggers including myself who participated in the event, some of whom are the ultimate foodie moms known for their passion for food and flavor. Louise Fandino-Santos, a Knorr Mom, hosted the event. We started off by introducing ourselves and sharing cooking stories, tips, and family favorites, particularly our respective signature dishes.

Knorr Brand Presentation

The group sharing was then followed by a short brand presentation on Knorr #LutongNanay with special focus on Sinigang, an all-time family, not to mention, kiddie favorite that makes everyone eat more rice, vegetables and soup. Knorr’s Brand Manager for Bouillon and Seasonings, Dhiren Karnani explained to us what what the #LutongNanay Campaign is all about.

This is what he had to say:

“Our goal is to bring back the value behind home cooked meals especially since people choose to eat outside or even alone in this fast-paced world. Knorr aims to help more moms bring the family together through the best flavors in their cooking.”

He added:

“Cooking is a force for good. When a mother cooks, it is often seen as a way for her to ensure her family’s well being – and through Knorr, moms can serve nutritious meals without sacrificing great flavor”

I couldn't agree more.

Cooking Demonstration

Before we mommy bloggers cooked our sinigangs, we had the pleasure of watching a cooking demonstration of sinigang by Chef Kai – a talented chef and a mother to two. This she did of course using the famous Knorr sinigang powder and other Knorr seasonings. Although she followed a recipe, she reminded us that we can actually deviate a little depending on personal preference for flavor.

Mommy Bloggers Cook

We were all excited to cook and before we knew it, it was our turn. We were divided into groups to cook different sinigang recipes.  Four different Sinigang variations were prepared and enjoyed that day, namely: Knorr Sinigang with Pakwan, Knorr Surf and Turf Sinigang, Knorr Sinigang na Liempo sa Sampaloc and Knorr Sizzling Sinigang. Mind you, these recipes are not your usual sinigang recipes so we were all curious as to how our finished products will turn out.

All of the participants had the hands-on opportunity to experience cooking these Sinigang variations.

Everyone was pleased with the end dish – our own and those of the other participants.

Apart from tasting the result of the recipes assigned to us, we also excitedly tried the Sinigang dishes of the other groups.

Although it was supposed to be a contest of sorts, everyone came out a winner as we all discovered new ways to reinvent sinigang many times over.

After cooking, we plated our dishes. As you can see, every group created a masterpiece both visually and taste-wise.

Everyone left with new friends, happy tummies and great memories.

My Say

I do miss home-cooked meals. My parents lovingly served us those so I cannot deny I often crave for them, even sometimes longing to be brought back in time to capture those moments. That is why I try to recreate them for my own children by serving them home-cooked meals as often as I can.

That said, they deserve the chance to create their own childhood memories that can only come from moments spent with the family. With a little help from Knorr, I'm sure creating memories of good food that will comfort them throughout their lives won't be a problem.
